Books for International Goodwill (B.I.G.) with SVBA, SVDC, and the Annapolis Area Social Group
Saturday, January 28, 2012 9AM - 12PM 2000 Capital Drive Annapolis, MD

*** A combined event with SVBA, SVDC (Single Volunteers of DC), and the Annapolis Area Social Group from Meetup.com!! ***
Please join volunteers from SVBA, SVDC, and Books for International Goodwill (www.big-books.org) as we sort books by age level and pack them for shipment to overseas locations. Over 1,000,000 books have been shipped to Africa, Eastern Europe, and other areas of the world.
For over 15 years, Books for International Goodwill (B.I.G.) has successfully recycled used books for productive use by those who need books for schools and libraries to improve literacy in developing communities around the world. B.I.G. is a project begun by the Parole Rotary Club of Annapolis and is now an independent non-profit entity. It's motto is "Spreading Literacy by Keeping Books Alive".
Last-minute volunteers are welcome to this event. Please send an email to the event leader so that we have your email address, and contact the event leader when you arrive at the B.I.G. warehouse. Directions to the warehouse can be found at the B.I.G. website at www.big-books.org.
Please specify the event name and your gender on the subject line of your email when signing up for an event or social.

Weekday Workout at The Loading Dock
Wednesday, February 1, 2012 6PM - 8PM 2 North Kresson Street Baltimore, MD 21224

Instead of getting your mid-week workout in a gym, why not try a more productive workout while helping out a worthy cause?
The Loading Dock, Inc. (TLD) is the first successful, self-sufficient, nonprofit distributor of reusable building materials in the country. TLD's mission is to increase the supply of decent, affordable housing while promoting sustainable development through reuse. Since 1984, TLD has saved low-income housing and community projects over $6.7 million and has rescued over 33,000 tons of building materials from landfills. TLD serves as a national model for communities interested in starting a reuse facility and is the recipient of two prestigious national awards: the Presidential Award for Sustainable development and the United Nations Habitat II "Building Communities of Opportunity" National Excellence Award.
Much in the way that the Maryland Food Bank accepts donations of food stuffs and distributes them to local needy families, TLD accepts donations of building supplies and recycles (if needed) and distributes them for projects benefiting needy families. We will be doing 'general' warehouse work which may include organizing, counting, labeling... ...And we really do make a difference! The Loading Dock's sales always improve after our volunteer worknight because the warehouse looks so much better after we are done!
Parking is provided in lighted, fenced parking lot immediately adjacent to TLD.
We usually go out for a bite to eat afterwards for some additional socializing.
Please specify the event name and your gender on the subject line of your email when signing up for an event or social.

Maryland Food Bank
Saturday, February 11, 2012 8:30AM - 12PM 2200 Halethorpe Farms Rd Baltimore, MD 21227

The Maryland Food Bank accepts donations of food stuffs from both private and commercial organizations for distribution to needy families in the Baltimore area. SVBA has been active with Maryland Food Bank since the inception of SVBA. This is always a great 'self paced' event where we will either be sorting food stuffs (cans, boxes,...) into different bins and/or preparing distribution bags to go out to needy families. As we will be working as a group, there will be lots of time to socialize!
Additional volunteer info can be found at the MD Food Bank's website, at www.mdfoodbank.org .
Note: The Food Bank uses bleach to clean the food cans. Please, wear old clothes that you do not mind trashing.
Please specify the event name and your gender on the subject line of your email when signing up for an event or social.

Baltimore Reads Book Bank
Saturday, February 18, 2012 9am-noon The Baltimore Sun Calvert Street complex Baltimore, MD

The Baltimore Reads Book Bank has provided more than 1,000,000 new and gently used children's books to disadvantaged families in Baltimore since 1992. Their goal is to spark family reading at home by making sure there are plenty of books available.
Volunteers are needed to help organize books at the Book Bank.
The Book Bank is located at the back of The Baltimore Sun warehouse complex. The Book Bank can be difficult to find, so be sure to follow the directions at www.baltimorereads.org/directions-and-hours.html.
This event has been very popular with SVBA volunteers who work with children. An extra benefit of sorting books for the Baltimore Reads Book Bank is the nostalgia trip you'll experience when you see books that you just might remember from your childhood...!
Please specify the event name and your gender on the subject line of your email when signing up for an event or social.
