Weekday Workout at The Loading Dock
Wednesday, Sept 1, 2010 6PM - 8PM 2 North Kresson Street Baltimore, MD 21224

Instead of getting your mid-week workout in a gym, why not try a more productive workout while helping out a worthy cause?
The Loading Dock, Inc. (TLD) is the first successful, self-sufficient, nonprofit distributor of reusable building materials in the country. TLD's mission is to increase the supply of decent, affordable housing while promoting sustainable development through reuse. Since 1984, TLD has saved low-income housing and community projects over $6.7 million and has rescued over 33,000 tons of building materials from landfills. TLD serves as a national model for communities interested in starting a reuse facility and is the recipient of two prestigious national awards: the Presidential Award for Sustainable development and the United Nations Habitat II "Building Communities of Opportunity" National Excellence Award.
Much in the way that the Maryland Food Bank accepts donations of food stuffs and distributes them to local needy families, TLD accepts donations of building supplies and recycles (if needed) and distributes them for projects benefiting needy families. We will be doing 'general' warehouse work which may include organizing, counting, labeling... ...And we really do make a difference! The Loading Dock's sales always improve after our volunteer worknight because the warehouse looks so much better after we are done!
Parking is provided in lighted, fenced parking lot immediately adjacent to TLD.
We usually go out for a bite to eat afterwards for some additional socializing.
Please specify the event name and your gender on the subject line of your email when signing up for an event or social.

Cooking Dinner for the Homeless
Saturday, Sept 4, 2010 2:30PM - 5:30PM 2015 20th Street Ft. Meade, MD

Sarah's House (www.catholiccharities-md.org/sarahs-house), a shelter located at Fort Meade, extends a helping hand to those homeless people who are willing to help themselves. Founded in 1987, it provides services to homeless families and single women who are looking for a way out of the dead end of homelessness. We will be preparing a dinner of donated food for about 30-40 people. Just bring your willingness to chop and peel, and show off your cooking skills and community spirit!
Those who volunteer to work on this event will have an opportunity to help plan the menu if they choose. Volunteers will be asked to provide items of food costing between $10 and $15. The volunteers are invited to join the residents of Sarah's House in their evening meal. Dinner is served at 5:00.
Please specify the event name and your gender on the subject line of your email when signing up for an event or social.

Arts Alive 12: Fundraiser for Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts
Friday, September 10, 2010 5:30pm - 11pm Maryland Hall 801 Chase Street Annapolis, MD

Arts Alive is the largest single fundraider for Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts (MHCA), in their "tent under the stars" on Maryland Hall's front lawn. Proceeds support Maryland Hall's year-round arts programs. Featuring silent and live auctions, entertainment by the Brooks Tegler Orchestra and tasting stations with signature dishes and drinks by area restaurants, hotels and caterers.
SVBA volunteers have told Maryland Hall how much they have enjoyed this event! Help serve the community while working hard and having a great time at a fantastic event!
Founded in 1979, Maryland Hall (www.marylandhall.org) is a multi-disciplinary arts center whose mission is to provide exceptional opportunities for lifelong community participation in arts education, the visual arts and performing arts. Maryland Hall provides a broad range of arts-related programming for people of all ages, backgrounds and socio-economic levels.
To succeed with this evening's events, Maryland Hall needs many, many volunteers to assist us. With the help of our volunteers, last year's Arts Alive earned over $100,000. We used these funds to continue MHCA educational programs and needed renovations. We hope you will join us.
SVBA volunteers will be providing assistance as Dinner Servers. The dinner is a busy, festive setting and though your job requires energy and stamina, you are in the midst of the "party". The shift is from 5:30 PM until 10:30 PM and there are breaks during the evening. Servers please arrive by 5:00 to check in and enjoy a light supper. (If you cannot arrive until 6:00pm, we still welcome your help).
Responsibilities will include:
* setting some table items beforehand
* opening bottles of wine for each table
* overseeing your "Teen Assistants" to clear tables during dinner
* assisting with some food service (dinner is self-serve from food stations)
* assisting with clearing tables

Maryland Food Bank
Saturday, Sept 11, 2010 8:30AM - 12PM 2200 Halethorpe Farms Rd Baltimore, MD 21227

The Maryland Food Bank accepts donations of food stuffs from both private and commercial organizations for distribution to needy families in the Baltimore area. SVBA has been active with Maryland Food Bank since the inception of SVBA. This is always a great 'self paced' event where we will either be sorting food stuffs (cans, boxes,...) into different bins and/or preparing distribution bags to go out to needy families. As we will be working as a group, there will be lots of time to socialize!
Additional volunteer info can be found at the MD Food Bank's website, at www.mdfoodbank.org .
Note: The Food Bank uses bleach to clean the food cans. Please, wear old clothes that you do not mind trashing.
Please specify the event name and your gender on the subject line of your email when signing up for an event or social.
