Below is a collection of photos from a few of our past events. Just click on any image for a larger view. Want your picture on the web? Join us at an upcoming event and we'll see what we can do!
Mulching the picnic area at the Great Falls Tavern in Carderock, Maryland. There was a splendid hike at the end to the Great Falls overlook.

At the Rust Sanctuary of the Audubon Naturalist Society, we cleared gardens and trails of nasty weeds. Then, ravenously hungry, we retreated to a T.G.I.Friday's in Leesburg for the social.

It was the first weekend of Spring, and about 20 SVDC hikers visited Rock Creek Valley for a few hours. On the mid-hike break, hikers shared readings on peace, environmentalism, and other concerns of the day

We came, we washed, we painted. The fence around the Great Falls Tavern on the C&O canal never looked better. The team members went away looking somewhat less tidy, but between the great social and awesome visit to the falls afterward, we didn't care!

SVDC members, 40 and over, found great hiking at Seneca Creek State Park in early March, despite the snow. Afterward, we had a very social and delicious lunch at Roy's Place in Gaithersburg.

This SVDC social took approximately 30 SVDC members on a stroll through Rock Creek Park in February. It was quite beautiful, and not as cold as it looks in this picture. We learned, yet again, how much natural beauty there is in our city.

SVDC sent volunteers over to the Woodend estate of the Audubon Naturalist Society to decorate the mansion for Christmas and their annual Holiday Fair.

Spectacular views and excellent company made this SVDC trip to the Billy Goat Trail especially memorable.

Semi-annual clean up of Roosevelt Island.

Nearly a hundred SVDC volunteers braved heat, hard work, and a lot of waiting to handle balloons for the Fourth of July parade on the National Mall.

Weeding is a lot more fun with new friends. This is the Washington Youth Garden at the National Arboretum.

SVDC gets itself in high places...this time painting a cabin at Carderock.

SVDC provides volunteers to Food & Friends on a regular basis. Team members enjoy the hustle and bustle of assembling hundreds of meals for people suffering from life-challenging illnesses.

Approximately 500 lbs. of trash and 1,062 tires were removed from Prince William Forest Park by some incredibly industrious SVDC volunteers.

At the Azalea Gardens at Brighton Dam, we enjoyed a beautiful place, with lovely weather, and excellent company.

Roosevelt Island is a wonderful place to visit, even when pulling tires out of the mud! The social at Chipotle's in Rosslyn was a fine reward for our efforts.

The Easter Hike, 2002.

Fixing bluebird boxes at Piscataway National Park, SVDC volunteers painted, scraped, and dug post holes. Who knew it would take that many people to fix one particularly troublesome box?

SVDC volunteers helped out with Lifeline Partnership's Mardi Gras 2002 Dance for people with developmental disabilities. Everybody had a great time. Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Ten Thousand Villages is a retail store that markets the work of Third World artisans, and pays them a fair price. It was a special delight for the SVDC team that volunteered to unpack merchandise after the Alexandria store's renovation. Every box that was opened contained something unusual and surprising to be admired.

Once a month, SVDC helps out at Woodend, clearing invasive plants at the headquarters of the Audubon Naturalist Society.
Volunteers attacked invasive and thorny multiflora rose. A team effort ensured that no one was left behind on this project.
What fun it is to watch people throwing themselves into their work.

The New Year's Eve social brought old and new friends together, including a historic photo opportunity, getting all the SVDC Queen Bees in one picture (top, center).

A huge team of SVDC volunteers assembled in Baltimore to greet the New Year in the annual MasqueParade through the Inner Harbor. These pictures are from when volunteers were still in the convention center, waiting to head out. Later, the team was treated to a fireworks display at midnight, viewed from the top of the Baltimore World Trade Center.

Lifeline Partnership's Harvest Dance for people with developmental disabilities was a great success. SVDC folks helped decorate the hall, prepare the food & beverages, greet and mingle with the participants, encourage reluctant participants to dance, manage dance contests & prizes, and clean up. Everyone seemed to have a blast, both the participants and the volunteers!

There's nothing like a good run on a clear Thanksgiving morning. Of course, SDVC team members weren't running...we were signing them up and handing them water. Afterwards, we ran over to the IHOP for a tasty breakfast social.

SVDC volunteers help out at the Family Self-Sufficiency Program graduation in October 2001.

These SVDC volunteers cheered on the Mutts on the Mall sponsored by the Washington Humane Society.

This SVDC had the unusual opportunity to party like it was 1775, at the National Colonial Farm. We were costumed and instructed to play games and flirt, to which the team leader replied, "That's what we came for!"

The September 2001 clean-up of Roosevelt Island...get a load of all that trash SVDC picked up! We're not afraid to get dirty for a good cause.

At the Webb Sanctuary of the Audubon Naturalist Society, SVDC volunteers pulled up some nasty plants and put them in their place. We also rescued juniper and pine trees from the meadow. The social at the Clifton General Store was fun, and a rewarding rest from all our hard work.

Check out the smiles on the following photos of party-goers at Lifeline Partnership's Summer Dance on August 18th! We had a great group of participants. Single Volunteers of DC helped accomplish a variety of tasks -- from setting up to greeting to mingling to food prep to serving to dancing to cleaning up.

Roosevelt Island's annual clean-up means getting down-and-dirty; but it's a good cause, and some of SVDC's nicest volunteers care about the environment.

Stuffing envelopes for People for the American Way, SVDC volunteers were rewarded with pizza and good company.

SVDC Skydiving Social -- these are some BRAVE singles! Check out the expressions on their faces after landing -- is it exhilaration, or are they just happy to be on solid ground again?

The rafting trip social in July was one of SVDC's most exciting!

SVDC volunteers sort books and records for Goodwill Industries. And here's a hot tip: you get first pick at buying some, too!

Over 300 people enjoyed food, fun, dancing and gambling at our Spring Fling!

The Bambi Patrol built an anti-deer fence to protect the vegetables being grown by DC children at the Washington Youth Garden. The Friends of the National Arboretum staff were pleasantly surprised at how fast the SVDC team learned to tie the knots used to connect the bamboo structure.

Head Start event, June 2001.

In June 2001, a hardy SVDC team bushwhacked its way through Brookeville, Maryland, creating a trail for access to historic Oakley Cabin.

Cleaning up Pohick Bay proved to be a lot more fun when we used canoes to get around.

A beautiful April day in the Vegetable Garden at River Farm, home of the American Horticultural Society.

SVDC members were kept very busy on "Chip Patrol" at the National Arboretum in March 2001. Just take a look at the size of that pile of mulch!

Check out these photos from the Baltimore MasqueParade on New Year's Eve 2000! Our volunteers got to dress up as giant puppets and walk the parade route!

President Clinton and SVDC leader Nikki at the Million Mom March rally at the White House. President Clinton and Nikki's Mom (the beautiful woman on the right ), at the Million Mom March rally at the White House.

SVDC members with power tools at Habitat for Humanity!

These are some pictures from our recent "Millennium" gathering on the mall where the sights and sounds were beautiful, but the company was better!

Rikki's Refuge a 330 acre, all species, no kill peaceful sanctuary, received a new doggie downs from SVDC'ers. Some of the residents were walked, fed and got to play frisbee too!

Single Volunteers works with Fairfax ReLeaf in planing hundreds of new seedlings! Fairfax ReLeaf honored Single Volunteers with their Volunteer Organization of the Year Award, inscribed to "Single Volunteers of the District of Columbia (SVDC) for enthusiastically and effectively supporting Fairfax ReLeaf's urban reforestation projects during 1999 and lending volunteer help to Fairfax County's campaign '2000 Trees for the Year 2000', Fairfax ReLeaf honors SVDC for the planting of nearly 1,000 trees, a major contribution to making the Metro DC area a more pleasant and healthful place to live and work."

A few shots from the National Zoo. Single Volunteers work at the Zoo about once a month. We'll do everything from planting pansies to digging ditches to cleaning at the Ape House - you never know what work you will have to do when we visit the Zoo!

We've had two fantastic events at Congressional Cemetery - though I only have photos of one of those visits. We did everything from chopping down trees (chain saws for 2 lucky guys, regular saws for those of us a little too uncoordinated to use the chain saws) to collecting trash and cleaning/uprighting headstones. And after our first project it only took the City of DC 8 weeks to pick up all the trash we left nicely bagged on the side of the road...

We always have a lot of holiday events for our members. The two above are, on the left, working at the Alexandria Singers Holiday Choral Concert, and, on the right, a Holiday party for homeless/needy kids at the Center for Creative Non-Violence in DC.

Single Volunteers has been lucky to hook up with another volunteer organization, The Trash Force, a DC area group dedicated to cleaning up area parks, roadways, and neighborhoods. We volunteer with them at least once a month, cleaning up everywhere from Rock Creek Park to Dupont Circle to the C&O Canal. No matter where we go, we find tons of goodies... like lamp posts, tires, clothing, used condoms and much more! Join us at a future cleanup so that you too can find such wonderful prizes.

We were lucky to be asked to work the Rockville Jaycees' Haunted House, and we had a great time. The makeup was cheesy, as was our acting, but we all had a blast scaring little kids as they tried to escape the maze...
