Single Volunteers of the Western Reserve
Past Events - Salvation Army, North Pole Express
December, 2005

SVWR assisted ten organizations during the 2005 holiday season.  We wrapped presents; decorated holiday trees; delivered meals, food baskets, and gifts; and generally helped clients make the holidays brighter for everyone. Two of these events are pictured below.

Salvation Army  Volunteers did a fantastic job assembling boxes that were used for food, organizing the toys, and helping distribute the food and gifts to their clients. The Salvation Army was thrilled that we provided assistance once again this year.

I can't believe that little kid took the last chocolate donut.

How much water can four people drink?

Are we done yet?

Pretty ingenious! Wish I'd thought of it.

Our Coordinator, Bill Martz, had two very important tasks:  surveying the donuts (he did an excellent job) and supplying water for the SVWR volunteers. One of our first assignments was to assemble 2500 boxes so other volunteers could package the food items based on family size. Empty donut boxes made a handy tool to tally the number of boxes assembled.

North Pole Express   Sponsored by the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, this event is an interpretation of the book The Polar Express© by Chris Van Allsburg. During December evenings, the town of Peninsula is transformed into the North Pole, where elves and Santa welcome the trains.

SVWR volunteers braved the cold temperatures and donned their best (and warmest) elf clothing for the occasion.

I hope I didn't over-dress.

The lumber store converted to Santa's toy shop.

What all the well-dressed elves were wearing. The town of Peninsula was turned into an enchanted North Pole.
